We have a couple of options for those living outside of our Library District. Take a look at each to see if any makes sense for you and your particular situation. For more information, feel free to give us a call at 217-483-2713 or take a look at our Circulation Policy.
Anyone with a valid library card issued by a participating Illinois Reciprocal Borrowing Program library may use their card to check out materials here! Yay!
SHARE Membership and Requesting Materials Access
We, at the Chatham Area Public Library, are members of a group of libraries called SHARE. This group uses an automated method to request items for their patrons. Patrons whose libraries are members of this group are able to request materials from other libraries within this SHARE consortia.
Some examples of libraries in this category are:
Auburn Public Library
West Sangamon Public Library District
Rochester
Click here to see if your library is a member of this program. If they are, all you have to do come here with your library card and start checking out!
Non-SHARE Member Libraries
If your library is not a part of this program, no problem! All you need to do is come in with your library card and ID. We will have you fill out an application and contact your library to verify that your account is in good standing. Once that's all in order, you will be ready to roll!
Some examples of libraries in this category are:
Lincoln Library, the Public Library of Springfield
Pawnee Public Library
For more information about this, check out our Policy Page.
If you live outside of the boundaries of the Chatham Area Public Library District but own property or hold a lease within the boundaries of the Chatham Area Public Library District, you may be issued a library card. This type of card can be obtained by each individual whose name appears on the tax bill or commerical lease. More information about this can be found by clicking here.
People living outside of any library district boundaries are considered non-residents. According to Illinois Law, non-residents must apply for a library card at the library closest to their home. This can be determined by looking at the public library that is within the school district of their principal residence. Non-residents must also pay a fee, and for the Chatham Area Public Library, this fee is established by the Chatham Area Public Library Board of Trustees and is based on the Illinois State Library’s property tax formula.
